The Junior National Team of Bulgaria came back from the International Tournament in Poland with 2 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze medals. The tournament was hard; there were a lot of competitors and in some categories the fighters had to go through 7 fights for the gold medal. This was the third international tournament organised in Wrozlaw and the participants were very well prepared. Half of them were representing Polish Karate clubs, the rest being from clubs in Ukraine, Hungary, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Austria. Despite the hard tournament in the first round we didn’t have any lost fights except for Krum Andonov and Ayshegul Shen, who fought against opponents much heavier than them. After a very successful first round, victories followed for the Bulgarian team.

Stanislava Boycheva won easily all the fights in category -60kg for girls 18-21 years. Her intelligent fighting technique again didn’t give her opponents any chance in the fight.

Alexandra Marinova
won the gold despite the difficult fights in her category +60kg. Her last fight was just few minutes after the previous one.

Nikolai Yorgov
won all his fights doing wazari or ipon in his category – 80kg for juniors under 18 years. He lost at the final from the Pyotr Biszak, Poland.

Ivan Ivanov won 3 fights and took the second place in category +80kg. All his opponents were much taller and heavier than him. Despite that, he showed a true fighting spirit and did not stop attacking even for a moment.
Nazife Sabri won the second place in the category -60kg for girls under 18 years. The comments about her were that she was fighting like a Japanese lady warrior. Despite the short time for a rest after the hard semi final, she did her best to win the gold.
Borislav Mihov took the third place in the category -70kg for juniors under 21 years. He drew the attention of the audience and the judges right from the beginning. He managed to surprise his opponents with unusual technique. At the semi final a competitor from Ukraine had to use a forbidden technique (a punch in the throat) with which he managed to eliminate Borislav. The Ukranian main judge announced the Ukrainian competitor as the winner which caused a long pause and arguments among the judges. Borislav was sent to a hospital by the doctors although he showed he was ready to complete the fight.
Dean Bratkov won the third place in category -70kg. He lost at the semi final from a competitor from Poland – the last year’s European champion in the category.
Kristian Stoynov took the bronze after he injured his foot at the quarter final. However, he fought till the end and did his best.
Petia Koleva took the third place after winning many difficult fights. At the semi final she had problems with the head protection but even then she fought well against the champion in this category.

This tournament was a good test for debutants, experienced competitors and coaches as well. The team showed a desire for victory in each fight.

The sponsors – Armeez have thought about everything to make the journey to Poland fast and convenient. The team was provided with a private airplane flying directly to Wrozlaw. This saved changing flights and waiting  time at the airports. The juniors were also provided with food at a traditional Chinese and a Polish restaurants.

The European Open Weight Category Championship took place on 22 November, 2008 in Varna, Bulgaria. There were 120 competitors from 17 European countries participating – this comprised of Kata competition, men and women fighting for the gold medal in the open weight category as well as boys and girls competing in categories. The championship was full of surprises till the very last moment. Some of the favourites could not reach the finals and some good fights didn’t get the decision deserved. But that is Kyokushin Karate – to secure a victory, you have to do a nock-out or a nock-down. Everything else is up to the judges.

You can browse photos from the championship here…

Nevilin Atnasov managed to go through some tough competition and took the gold medal for junior boys, category -75 kg.

Danaila Cherneva didn’t have any problems eliminating her opponents up to the final where she fought against Agnieszka Sipien (Poland) and the judges voted a draw. A weight check followed and there was not a 10 kg weight difference. Consequently, Danaila lost by the number of boards broken (9 for Danaila, 10 for Agnieszka). Despite loosing at the final, she took the Women Best Spirit award. An interesting fact is that the last year Danaila won against Agnieszka in the regular time at the final.

Petar Martinov’s fights were one of the strongest among those of the favourites at this championship. He took the title for Men Best Tameshiwari – a total of 21 boards which he broke with 4 different techniques. At the semi-final Petar stood up against the European Champion – Alejandro Navarro (Spain) and lost by decision of the judges for a draw and weight difference in favour of Navarro.

Stanislava Boicheva, who traditionally has been winning the gold medal in each competition, this time became second after the judges voted for the Ukrainian competitor. Our other girls – Alexandra Marinova and Nazife Sabri didn’t manage to get the judges support neither and became 2nd and 5th respectively.

The final result is 8 medals for Bulgaria which puts us ain the 2nd place as a team after Poland and before Spain.

The Bulgarian team came back with:
17 cups in total:
7 champions
5 vice-champions
4 bronze medals
1 award for best technique
(Alexander Petrov), a lot of applause and many compliments. The competition was not easy. The distance between Bulgaria and LA is huge (10 000 km), there were 3 flights to be changed and 10 hours time difference. But our team proved that nothing could stop them.

Despite the short period for preparation (3 weeks) many of the fights finished with wazari or ipon made by the Bulgarian fighters. The victories were achieved in the true spirit of Kyokushin, so were the few losses!

Rewarding the top fighters in the championship

The whole championship was full of surprises – many ipons and wazaris. Lechi Kurbanov (Russia) lost against Ilia Karpenko (Russia) – he received an unexpected jodan mawashi in the head. May be he had underestimated his opponent or after having made a knock out to Hristo Hristov (Bulgaria), Lechi was a bit nervous and decided to show that he can manage without his winning technique – tobi ushiro mawashi geri.picture from http://www.karate.org.pl

Petar Martinov (Bulgaria) lost against Anderson da Silva (Brazil) after a 7 minute fight, another draw and one board less broken.

Alejandro Navarro (Spain) did ipon with ushiro mawashi geri and won against his opponent Yoje Koguri (Japan).

Pablo Estenoso (Spain) knocked out his opponent Fabiano da Silva (Brazil) with a hidza geri.

All this led to the quarter finals where the draw was the f ollowing: Ewerton Teixeira (Brazil)Darmen Sadvokasov (Russia); Jan Soukoup (Czech Republic)Artur Ovanesian (Armenia). For the first time there were no Japanese in the top four.

Lechi Kurbanov won the award for Tameshivari with the record 31 boards broken.

Europe and Russia gave a very strong performance - there were 6 European and 9 Russian fighters in the last day.

Well done for the Bulgarian fighters as well! They fought full heartedly and came in the top 32 in the world of Kuokushinkai. Congratulations and welcome back home!

We have the latest news from Japan!

In the second day of the championship Petar Martinov managed to eliminate two competitors – one from New Zealand and Andrei Chirkov from Russia. Our competitor won his first fight with wazari making ushiro mawashi with a jump against the impressive New Zealander (weighting 115 kg). The second fight against the Russian karateka was won quickly in the regular time.

As a whole, Europe is doing really well. Pablo Estensoro is knocking out everybody who is standing on his way to the title. So far he has made 4 wazari with hidza geri djodan. Navaro is in perfect shape and he is moving quickly towards the finals.

On the third day of the championship there are only 32 fighters remaining. Six of them are from Europe: 2 Bulgarian fighters – Petar Martinov and Zahari Damianov; 2 Spanish fighters – Alejandro Navaro and Pablo Estensoro; 1 Armenian – Artur Vhovanisian and the Czech competitor Jan Sokoup. Only five fights stay on the way of the future world champion to the golden medal.

The final day will start with tameshiveri. What is coming next is the fight of Petar Martinov against  the Brazilian competitor Andriano da Silva, followed by the fight of Diego da Silva /Brazil/ against Tatsua Murata /Japan/. Everton Teixeira /who is the favourite of this championship/ is next.

Yesterday Stilian Petrov and Hristo Hristov were eliminated after hard fights with some of the favourite competitors in the championship.

Hristo Hristov fought against Lechi Kurbanov (pointed out as the top fighter of Russia) and Stilian Petrov lost after a disputable fight with Godzeri Kanadze /Russia/ (European champion category -90 kg for 2005).

Fingers crossed for our guys and let’s wish them to continue with their good performance till the very end of the championship!
